3days in Krakow

What to do in Krakow?

Krakow a well-known historical city, where even a short visit offers a wealth of experiences. Here’s a miniplan, what to see and do.

Walk 1

The Old Town is a unique treasure trove of works of art, historic landmarks and monuments. The Main Market Square, the largest medieval square in Europe, has been preserved unaltered since 1257 and was included on the first UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites in 1978.

The Cloth Hall was a medieval trade hub and is nowadays one of the city’s most popular shopping arcades. It also features The Gallery of 19th Century Polish Art on the 1st floor. Looming over the rest of the square is the epic St. Mary’s Church, from one of whose towers a bugle call is played every hour in the four directions of the city.

Finally, the Old Town is bordered to the south by the Wawel Royal Castle, once the residence of Polish monarchs until the late 16th century and now an incredible museum.

Walk 2

Kazimierz – formerly a separate city, today Kazimierz is a district of Krakow itself, and the home of the long-standing coexistence of two cultures, the Christian and Jewish. It is a space full of globally-significant monuments of Judaism, but most of all, it is an area bustling with life, both artistic and social. Numerous antiques and art markets are helf here and live music resounds throughout the district’s numerous cafés, restaurants and bars.

Walk 3

Podgórze – located in the geographical centre of Krakow entices visitors with its greenery, intimacy and mysterious atmosphere and variety of modern museums. The historic buildings of the former Oskar Schindler Emalia Factory at 4 Lipowa Street are now home to a branch of the Historical Museum, which here houses an innovative permanent exhibition : Krakow under Nazi Occupation 1939-1945. Right next door the Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow is situated.

Walk 4

Nowa Huta – the most interesting and complete realisation of the socialist-realist project. The legendary Plac Centralny, Aleja Roz, the Administrative Centre of the former Steelworks surprise visitors with their monumental character and unusual symmetry. The unique urban layout of Nowa Huta has also been included on the list of monuments of the City of Krakow, and efforts are being made to have it included on UNESCO List.

More road accidents with cyclists in Poland

Rising popularity of cycling and pro-

cycling weather conditions resulted in an increase in cyclists on the road and cycle-related accidents in 2011. This is according to a recent report of The General Directorate for National Roads and Highways (GDDKiA) of Poland.

Accidents involving cyclists in 2011 accounted for 12% of all accidents and 7.5% of the total death toll. Of a total of 4654 accidents in 2011, 314 cyclists were killed and 4,142 were wounded, representing an increase in deaths by 12% compared to the 2010 rate. The largest increase occurred in the first three months of the year 2011, when the number of people killed in accidents with cyclists increased by 86% compared to the same period the year before.

An increase in the number of cycling accidents in 2011 has also been observed in neighbouring Germany. The main reason for this was much better weather: a very warm winter and almost total lack of rainfall in autumn. For example, in January 2010, the average air temperature in Poland was -7.0 C, and in January

2011 -0.6 C. Growing popularity of cycling in big cities has also led to more cyclists on the roads with

higher absolute cycling-accident

numbers.

The majority of road accidents involving cyclists involve a side collision with a car because of the violation of the right of way (by cyclists and car drivers equally), taking place in daylight in good weather conditions by sober traffic participants. Significant problems also arise from incorrect overtaking by the drivers or incorrect turning, mostly to the left.
