Malev – only days till the end?

MALEV, Hungarian Airlines, are in trouble for a few years now.

Undercapitalized, a bad privatization, than reprivatization (state owned again), still without money, than EU ordered to repay money’s given by the state as it is agains EU regulations.

Now, index.hu said, according its sources Malev has only days till the airline runs out of money and need to ground its fleet.

Vueling denied the info, that the spanish budget airline would like to buy the hungarian air carrier. But the spanish potential buyer was just the last in the queue as there were rumours about a chinese, czech, etc. buyer too.

The main question is what’s gonna be with the 2600 employees and the planes, and all the slot times of Malev in case of bankrupcy as well as what’s gonna be with Budapest Airport’s traffic.

There were also a plan B, to start a new company with Malev’s assets to save all the slot times and the advantages of a national carrier, than look for a buyer/investor later.

It seems that not too good to be an airline in Central and Eastern Europe, as CSA, the Czech Airlines are also in trouble with a potential bankrupcy in the end, but there were no buyer for serbian, romanian or even the polish airline.

Austrian Airlines also wants to recalculate routes and cut some flights.

Iberia low-fare unit eyes Malev, Nepszabadsag says

Vueling, the low-fare unit of Spanish airline Iberia, is eyeing troubled Hungarian national carrier Malev, daily Nepszabadsag said on Friday, without citing any sources.

The paper wrote that Vueling, which was also named as a party interested in Malev by business weekly Figyelo, had already wound up talks with the National Development Ministry and had prepared a contract and a business plan. Vueling’s board is to take a decision on the matter in February, it added.

Vueling could take over Malev by the time the airline starts its summer timetable, Nepszabadsag said.

Malev now in financial trouble (again or still) as European Comission ordered to repay more than 100 billion HUF, which was goverment funding over the last couple of years. This could be the end of the airline, so the goverment try to sell it. Which is not easy, as the russian bank still own 5% and not agreed on all terms. As well as Budapest Airport has a problem of bankrupcy of Malev as the national carrier still makes about 50% of the total revenue.
