We spent a halfday in the cave thermal bath in Miskolctapolca recently, so here’s the conclusion how it was.

First of all, the cave bath is a great attraction for all ages, although it is full of hot summer days and you have to wait in a long long que to get in. Despite the modern looking computer system, it is quite slow as well.

Anyway, once you are in you can choose cabins to change clothes or simple lockers. We’ve chosen the lockers, but it was not a lucky bet. It was working with 100HUF coins, each time you open it!!! Come on…we took our children as well, so they were asking everytime for this and that, so we left there around 300HUF.

Ok, Imagine , that there are an outdoor and indoor part of the place. There are great children pools, and a swimming pool outside (i think 5 pools outside), and the cave pool and sauna, thermal bath inside. (these facilities are available in wintertime as well).

So, we went into the cave and the first impression is that it is loud! As there were many people, talking, playing and it is a close area with cave above…makes it noisy. But it was not a problem, the children liked the cave. The water is half way to cold and warm, so perfect as we disappeared into the cave system. Which is magnificent from the inside, as the water flows like a real river in the caves. You can touch the rocks, the water is nicely lighted from under the water. There are different attractions, like waterfalls, showers, different halls you can enter.  Best was the one which was completly dark, with star kindda paintings (or led lights) on the ceiling. It is really relaxing to be in the water inside a cave, watching the skylights. Although children shouted (as everyone else in the dark hall) :-) But they did like it.

Than we went outside (we missed the sauna and thermal bath, but there are whirlpool and sauna and i think 2 thermal pools inside as well). We also missed the children pools as our girl only 3, so she can not go into without supervision, and they don’t let adults in…so we choosen another pool with nice wooden top. The water was around 24 degree celsius which is good, and the pool had whirlpool in regular times. Girls liked the big bubbles :-)

The area is ok, as we went to buy ice-cream. The prices are not that high (ice-cream was 150HUF), but there are short of shops and restaurants. Maybe it is the normal and other hungarian pools had too many i don’t know.

There are also small sized grassed area where you can lay down your towel, as it was full we were hard to find a good place.

There are a sauna park and other facilities as well which we did not used. The surrounding forests are offer nice view as Miskolctapolca is a nice place, although there are not too many things to do. We went for a walk after our three hour (!!!, watch out there are no daily tickets only a couple of hours and you have to pay extra per mins upon it). There are a big, shallow fishpond where you can rent out boats, we discovered a playground (was good fun), an adventure park in the forest and a bob sliding point. (watch video here)

There are many restaurants around as there are many hotels, but you can try smaller takeaway shops as well to buy langos (which is around 200HUF) or beer, etc. We took 2 langos , plain ones, and those was ok, although we can buy langos around half price in the main marketplace in Miskolc , which is only around 20mins by bus.

Anyway, the Cave Thermal Bath is a unique attraction not only in Hungary but in Europe and it’s really worth a visit, but connect it with other things to see in Miskolc.
