Ocean sunfish strays into Rijeka´s river

A rescue operation took place yesterday (Tue) to transport a humongous ocean sunfish back to its natural habitat from the mouth of Rjecina river where it was found.

The sunfish (mola mola) somehow strayed into the river and worried onlookers called emergency services to the rescue. The director of Natural History Museum in Rijeka Marin Kirincic said: “We had to drag him out of the water and put him in a dingy in order to transport him quicker, so he would not suffer.”

He added it was not clear why the fish had ended up in the river.

Experts speculate that the current may have dragged it or that the fish had suffered some sort of trauma, the daily 24 Sata writes.

Crime against tourists falls 20 per cent this year

Croatia has cut crimes against foreigners by 20 per cent this year, the Minister of Interior Tomislav Karamarko said at a recent meeting in Novi Vinodolski, adding that security is one of the country’s “exports.”

Minister Karamarko met in Novi Vinodolski with the Minister of Tourism Damir Bajs to conclude a cooperation agreement between the two ministries in the area of police security.

The Ministry of Tourism will co-finance with 200,000 kunas (27,500 Euros) the international police security project implemented by the Ministry of Interior.

“The guests who come on vacation in Croatia are not only happy with the country’s natural beauty, but also with their personal security,” said Minister Bajs.

The project is based on a unique kind of cooperation and exchange of police officers amongst various European countries and is supported by Interpol. Many European countries are currently considering similar endeavors based on the Croatian model, the daily Vecernji List writes.

In its fifth year of operation, this season the project has attracted 60 participants from Austria, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Germany.

Potty EU gives dirty beaches clean bill of health

Barmy new EU legislation means Croatian beaches can now have up to ten times more faeces and excrement than previously.

Thanks to a new method for evaluating the quality of water, ten times higher concentrations of faecal bacteria E.coli and six times higher concentrations of faecal streptococci will be allowed.

Consequently, 90 per cent of Croatian beaches have now been stuck into the top category of “Excellent quality” when only last year over half were in the second category of “suitable for swimmers”.

Head of Health Ecology at Zadar’s Institute of Public Health Benito Pucar said that instead of four, there will be three new categories, but that new rules will not be of consequence for swimmers’ health, the daily Slobodna Dalmacija writes.

Monument´s breast is a must touch in Makarska

A bronze statue of a topless woman at a holiday hotspot has become a hit – with foreign women touching her right boob for luck.

The life-size bronze – showing a holidaymaker with a local man – was created in Makarska seaside resort in Croatia as a tribute to all the women tourists who’ve fallen for local men.

The statue has been dubbed Tribute to the Unknown Seagull, after the nickname for local men who try to pick up female tourists.

Unveiled a few years ago as a local joke, the statue is now a must-see and a must-touch with thousands of tourists who believe touching the woman’s exposed breast will bring them luck.
